Calculus of Variations

Abstract

The Calculus of Variations is both a classical subject, with long-standing open questions which have generated exciting discoveries in recent decades, and a modern subject in which new types of questions arise, driven by mathematical developments and new applications. It is also a subject with a very wide scope, including geometric variational problems, optimal transportation, geometric inequalities and domain optimization, elliptic regularity, geometric measure theory, harmonic analysis, and free boundary problems. The workshop balanced the traditional interests of past conferences with emerging perspectives on weak convergence, concentration, rigidity and geometric regularity. The programme showed how ideas from one area can lead to progress in another, and how the study of physical models continues to inspire new mathematical questions.
